How snide of you, Anonymous (1:17 PM)! Have you ever heard of giving back to your community?

Shrewsbury Education Foundation is a highly-regarded, 100% volunteer organization which helps close gaps left by the years of budget cuts in school programs. The grants provided to teachers each year are truly extensions or enrichments to the curriculum; students of all ages benefit from the extra efforts of their teachers which are partially or wholly funded through SEF.

Why not have a nice event to thank the deserving teachers who have earned this year's grants and to celebrate Dr. Bent's years of service to Shrewsbury schools?

It would be great if all tax happy and no tax happy people come to the event. Only happy people. It benefits programs in the schools that the budget can not cover. Every year we are seeing more and more items needed that should be covered in the school budget. We provide grants to all the public schools in Shrewsbury and over the years the grants seem to help the kids from wealthy families and those from not so well off, struggling students, those who need more academic stimulation and Life Skills students.

Also Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services will be having their 5th Annual Spring Gala on Sat. Feb. 28 from 6pm to 11pm at St. Johns. Cost is $75 per person. I am not part of that group but here is the website for more info.

This will be a tough year for all non profit groups, so don't forget to donate. It is often tax deductible so you NO tax people should love that part.

and see the benefit SEF provides,

>>>>The Mission of SEF is to stimulate, strengthen and support the creation and implementation of innovative educational programs and enrichment activities that benefit students of the Shrewsbury Public Schools.

Since its inception in 1992, SEF has awarded nearly $250,000 in grants.

I find nothing objectonable about $50. Sure they could have held it at the local civic hall and offered pizza and thus reduced the price, but you get what yolu pay for.

I'm sure it is. But since I don't budget that much for food for the 5 of us per week, I doubt I'll ever be there.I have been filling in the educational gaps for my children since before they started. I only wish I had the patience to home school full time.

Caffy, Lashes out at - Late paperwork for Manager grade. One Selectman could not get it done on time....Guess Who? hehehehehehe

Fifty bucks a head for a worthy cause. Hell, people paid that for the SOAR Wine Tasting and nobody complained. Sounds like a good deal to me (even if we do have to listen to Tim Murray). I'll be there.

Why is this a suprise? He doesn't do any of the work. He won't sign the town payroll warrents, won't go to any school committee meetings (but can't wait to write them obnoxious letters), brings out half baked ideas that waste everyone's time and acts like a buffoon in the meetings. God I hope someone decent runs in a couple of years against him. Gee...Let's put another channel 28 blowhard on the board this year. If this town does that, god help us.

Seriously, how do you feed a family of five for less than $50/week? What do you eat? I can't come close to that.

Anonymous said...

You can't even feed a family of 5 cats for $50 a week. I suppose you could feed your family those cats for $50 a week. Tastes like chicken!

Anonymous said...

It's called planning ahead, cutting coupons and buying items on sale.

Anonymous said...

We'd have to eat the coupons to come in under $50 a week for my family.

Anonymous said...

clearly you are not cash poor.
Since that is really the ONLY thing that can be reasonably controlled in a budget. You do what you have to. or more specifically, do without.
and no, we make too much to qualify for any of those "perks" that you tax hungry people want to fund.

$50/week/5 people/21 meals per week = $0.48 per meal per person

Unless you're in Subsaharan Africa and Sally Struthers is stopping by with bowls of grule for your kids every day, I really don't see how that is even remotely possible.

I'd love to see a typical grocery list of how this person can possibly accomplish this. I suppose if you ate nothing but cardboard Raman Noodles @ $0.40 per pack you could do it.

how much do you think it costs to make a peanut butter sandwich?

you can get a package of 10 hot dogs on sale for 99 cents

generic mac and cheese 3 / 1.00

if that's what you have to do? you do it.

sometimes you just eat twice a day.

enjoy your $50 meal

but 50 / 5 that is even cutting it. I was referring originally to more like 50 per person, as that is what the dinner costs. But I have had weeks when it has been creative around here.

Sally Struthers stopping by with bowls of grool...He is a funny SOB. You have to give him that.

I suppose if you have to be an SOB, you might as well be a funny one.

Hi all,
OK a six pack of Ramen (oriental/beef flavor are my personal favorites) is $1.50 at S&S so that is .25 cents a package. Sometimes it is even just a buck. Come on John let's really bargain hunt!

On a serious note, the SEF dinner is such a worthwhile spend in my opinion. What greater cause then to fund educational opportunities for our kiddos.

I really do eat a lot of Ramen and I really am a bargain hunter. Ask anyone who knows me!

Chris Juetten (proud Ramen eater)

25 cents a pack! That's what they cost when I was in college 100 years ago. I wonder if they are still the same batch and that's why the price never went up. They certainly have a consistancy that they could be.

Actually I like them too. They are loaded with salt though. Little known fact that when they say that they have 100% RDA of sodium, that doesn't apply to an actual living human.

chris juetten said...

John,
I'm curious about the Ramen trivia... is the 100% referring to any living creature?

In any event, (pardon the pun) I'm glad you brought up the analogy to the Soar Fund Raiser. I believe that many folks go to these events strictly for the opportunity to support a cause they feel strongly about and to be with others who feel the same way.

I'm going to SEF because it is an opportunity to celebrate innovative ideas about education and as a former school teacher that is very cool. It is also wonderful that this is not on the tax payer's dime and is just the generous donations of our community members.

I think both you and I have seen the people and businesses step up for Soar and going to events like these make you happy to see that there is a tremendous spirit of giving here in Shrewsbury.

So to the folks that think it is too pricey, I would say that it is such a worthy cause that if at all possible find a way. There is no donation too small for any of these worthy charities. Please consider the SYFS Gala as well this event helps fund SYFS an organization that does so much for our community.

One final note, I do not recommend a diet chiefly of Ramen noodles as it could cause bloating! Chris Juetten
