Lebeaux Stays For Now

Yesterday, Selectman John Lebeaux was formally hired by the Town of Princeton to be their Town Administrator.

Princeton Selectmen and Lebeaux agreed to a three-year contract paying $85k annually.

Lebeaux, like his predecessor in Princeton, will continue being a Selectman for a different town. In fact, he attended a Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen meeting last night. There is no known legal requirement that he step down because conflict of interest laws do not apply.

So Mr. Lebeux wants to stay on the BOS while working as a Town Admin for Princeton. It is a good deal for him. He gets to count both his remaining year as a Selectman and his first year as Princeton Town Admin towards pension accrual. Two for one not a bad deal if you can get it. Anyone know what percentage municipal pensions are figured at. Just trying to figure out how much Shrewsbury will have in pension liability based on the $85K salary the new Princeton Town Admin will be getting.

Since the new pension, reform does not take effect for until current terms expire or 2012 there is still time for another long time member of the BOS to get his perk as well. All he has to do is land a full time municipal or state job and hold it for two years and Shrewsbury will be on the hook again for pension liability. Of course, this might not happen if this selectman can get by on the commission he stands to gain for the property on Main Street he is representing as the broker. The one with the dilapidated old house next to the day care center. Good thing town meeting passed the zoning change for the proposed Holiday Inn. Who says Public Service does not pay. We may be cheap but our elected leaders seem to be doing okay.

To the previous poster-- thank you for summing up the sad system we have here in Shrewsbury.

Our elected leaders know how to milk the system and make our town pay for their retirement.

What a privilege you have given me and my fellow tax paying citizens who don't have pensions.

I'm so glad our town will base your pension not on $2,000 a year but $85,000! Your smarter than I ever gave you credit.

You want to shorten his pension years vote him out if he seeks re-election it is that simple.

Another reason Term limits make sense!

What an outrage.....he should be run out of town.....his service to this town has already paid him well with the publicity for the old Nursery.......Just wait till he sells his family land..... Remember....It pays to grow with a shmow.

I'm not a resident of Shrewsbury so I'm probably missing context here. I don't understand why it's such a scandal that John Lebeaux would want to continue serving his term as selectman even though he's working as an employee of another town. Unless it's just politics.

Yes, Jim; it's just politics, the kind of mean-spirited politics that we experience all too often here in Shrewsbury

A comment was rejected because it told people to stop "complaining," which is a cardinal sin on this blog. The comment might be accepted without that statement.

As is too often the case misinformation is presented as fact on this blog.

John cannot “count both his remaining year as a Selectman and his first year as Princeton Town Admin towards pension accrual.” He can only be credited for one year of service towards a pension in 2009 even if he has two government jobs at the same time. There’s no double-dipping.

Shrewsbury’s and Princeton’s responsibility of whatever his pension will be will take into account how much he earns with each employer. Since he makes $2,000 a year in Shrewsbury and $85,000 as Princeton Town Manager, Princeton’s retirement system will be charged for all but a tiny percentage of the total amount.

Jim Gonyea, for a guy who lives out of town, you hit the nail right on the head. It is small-town politics at its worst. This blog favors one political direction big-time. The voters of Shrewsbury have shown that they reject that point of view election after election.

Government Employee

If this is true then thank goodness we are not going to be supporting Mr. Lebeaux's retirement.

If we have to give him a tiny pension then so be it even though he has already profited from his position. This is a lesson that we do not need any more local business owners running the town! Carl W.

Most likley leaving the door open for when he comes back with tail beween legs, begging Dan for HELP.....From what I have seen of his compitance level. 6 months is my bet in Princeton till they show him the door.

The reason for John remaining a selectman is obvious: John will clearly not be as good a Town Admin as Dan Morgado, so he'll want to lean on Dan for advice.

John spending time in Morgado's office will raise eyebrows, unless of course, John has a legitimate reason for being there, such as being a Selectman.

So my question is: How much will Priceton reimburse Shrewsbury for training their Town Admin?
