Class to teach skills to last a life time.

Jean Brunell, SHS Family Consumer Science/Health teacher, and I had a chat over the summer about her idea for a cooking class for children to be held in her Shrewsbury High School Consumer Science (yup, Home Ec to most of us) kitchens. I thought it was a great idea and told her to go for it, I have seen similar courses in other towns for children and they seemed to be very popular. The Food Network has a huge following of young fans fueling record numbers of those interested in the culinary arts. Jean ran the idea by Dr. Sawyer and it has been approved. Please check out the full flyer on any of the elementary school web pages or Sherwood, entitled Culinary Creations.

Here is just a taste of what the young chefs will be creating. Cooking with Literacy is for those in grades 1 to 4 and they will be creating foods based on books. The award winning, “Caps for Sale” will inspire Banana and Monkey Bread; “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” will inspire the creation of what else? Spaghetti and meatball cupcakes of course! The Main Attraction class will be for those in grades 4-6 with the movie theme setting the menu. Harry Potter: Quidditch Players Pie; The Princess Diaries: Blueberry Scones, and The Wizard of Oz: Auntie M’s M&M Cookies.

The cost of the six week, 90 minute course is $82 (includes all materials). The classes start Oct13 and are limited to 12 per class, so don’t procrastinate. If you are interested go to a school website or you can contact Jean Brunell at jbrunell@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us for more information.

I think it's a wonderful idea! If it had been offered where I went to school, I might have become a chef, since I love to cook so much.
Another thought would be to teach the kids how to (stretch am meal) ie., hearty soups, making meals out of leftovers etc., so that in times like these, if they ever happen in their lifetimes, they can be semi prepared on economical food prep. You'd be surprised the people and friends of mine who have NO idea how to conserve on food/skip take out food/skip take out coffee, make your own at home etc. to the tune of hundreds of $$$ saved.

Glad to see this in the school.

How about HEALTHY cooking instead of cupcakes? Don't we already have a child obesity problem.

To any parents out there with experience picking kids up at Floral Street School:

Is it feasible to pick up my child through the car line and get to the high school by 3:45? Normally my daughter rides the bus and doesn't get home until almost 3:45. I have heard the car line is very long, so I'm wondering what time I would be likely to get her into the car (and what time I would need to get into the line).

It seems like 3:45 is a little early for an after school program for elementary aged kids but maybe I'm wrong?

Thanks!
Kathy

Maybe the spaghetti and meatballs cupcake is not a dessert but a cute way to make more attractive to children?

Sounds like a fun class and good way to use the facilities more.

My daughter took Focus on Foods, which is basic home ec from my day, during her freshman year at the high school. They spend a good deal of time taking about nutrition and preparing healthy dishes. Their biggest limitation was the short class time and low budget to purchase materials to cook. Ms Brunelle does an outstanding job with what she has for resources. Let's hope this class is stil around for upcoming students in the future.
